What exactly is a graphic design thesis project? For me, it was an 18 month project, where I used design to bridge the knowledge gap between global current events and the American public. I designed a poster every day for a year, and published them each day to the project website. In 2010, 65% of 18 to 29 year olds got their news online, eclipsing television for the first time. I leveraged this trend and based the project online and promoted it with social media. The project reached over 180,000 viewers in 106 countries. The thesis won first place in the student category and judge’s choice in the SF AIGA 2011 Cause/Affect competition.

This course initially expounded and expanded on the basic principles of typography. Subsequently, I was encouraged to challenge my approach to these basic principles and explore new innovative ways to communicate with text and image. I took Sean Penn’s screenplay of Jon Krakauer’s novel Into the Wild and designed a book around the story and screenplay. The book was bound in distressed leather and most of the high level typography was constructed and photographed in nature. Into the Wild was the journey of a young man named Christopher McCandless (aka Alexander Supertramp) who was found dead in the Alaskan wilderness in September 1992. The screenplay followed the journey from his graduation at Emory University in April 1990 until his death of starvation near Lake Wentitika, Alaska.

The goals of this class were to inspire liberating ideas and innovative thinking. To translate ideas into meaningful messages, and to transform messages into powerful design, identity, products, images and experiences. I chose the issue of shark finning to explore over the 15 week class. I researched the current awareness campaigns and found that using graphic depictions of finned sharks did not create the impact one would hope. I had to approach this issue in a fresh way.

This is a classic problem of supply and demand. The demand for shark fin soup has risen over the past two decades because of the expanding Chinese middle class, and positioning of the soup as a status symbol. I had significant challenges with this assignment. Sharks are hard animals to conjure up sympathy for. As a western designer, It was difficult to approach a subject that was so deeply rooted in Asian tradition. My solution was to attack this issue with satire. I packaged shark fin soup.

L’imparfaite’s editor, Abdel Fahd Ayeva, made a comment about the publication: “We all grew up in an age where porn is readily available on the Internet, so for us it’s kind of banal.” There’s definitely an argument to be made about our generation becoming desensitized to porn, and of porn just being too easy. So, L’Imparfaite wisely caters to the largest erogenous zone in the body: the brain.” I was asked to design graphics for an article on the Moors Murders for the third issue of L’imparfaite. The murders were carried out by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley between July 1963 and October 1965, in and around what is now Greater Manchester, England. The victims were five children aged between 10 and 17 — four of whom were sexually assaulted. The Kooples was a French clothing brand that was most well known for its high-visibility marketing/photo campaigns where its clothes were modelled by couples with their names and relationship status. I parodied the cult status of the Moor Murderers and used them in a vandalized Kooples advertisement.

It’s Always Last Summer is the first novel by Virginia based author Scott Harris. Jennifer Selman offers up this summary: “It is a story about friendship. A story of love, loss, and wanting something so intently but realizing it may never happen. It’s a heartwrenching coming of age story, but one that isn’t the least bit cliché. The characters and the descriptive raw language thematically link the nostalgia of the past with the uncertainty of the future. Beautifully representing the destructive nature that plagues the characters, relationships, and places in the story, the cover design highlights this destruction and the courage it takes to move forward instead of remaining stagnant or potentially worse, to constantly look back.”

This was the project that sparked a thesis. We were asked to take something from our daily routine and build a narrative around it. I chose to explore my morning ritual of checking the BBC online for world news. I designed a poster every day for twenty days, based on a headline onBBC each morning. I defined tight parameters around the project to insure that the posters would work as a set. I worked from a pallet of 10 colors, the type family of Gotham, and only used bitmap or vector graphics. I used flat color and experimented with minimalism. I enjoyed the project and I felt that I gained a deeper understanding of global current events. I expanded this project into my thesis, where I designed 365 posters in 365 days. This is a selection from the 20 day genesis.

Pola Woman was a collection of Polaroids by fashion photographer Helmut Newton, published in 1992. Polaroids are the sketchbooks of photographers. These quick shots showed a glimpse into Newton’s intense creative process and his raw imagination and genius. I redesigned the book to showcase the candid, voyeuristic quality of the images. They conveyed the sense of randomness and process.

“The graphic compositions and the icy allure of his statuesque heroine is unmistakable. Polawoman covers both newton’s personal work as well as many of his fashion masterpieces, particularly from the daring pages of the late ‘70’s french vogue. A fascinating book for any Newton fan with many of the polaroids having witty and revealing notes scribbled over them.” Explained artist and photographer Boyway. The magic of Newton’s photography was uncovered in this intimate glimpse into his creative process. The book was in both German and English. I used different typefaces and colors to denote the language changes.

The Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival is a scholarship fundraiser in Martinsville, Va., that remembers two young music lovers who passed away recently — Edwin “The Rooster” Penn and Walker Shank. Edwin and Walker were both close friends of mine. I design a poster for the festival each year to support my friends, and to raise money for the scholarship that was made in their name.

For the third installment of Rooster Walk, I wanted to show how the festival helps to fill the empty spaces inside us, created with their passing. The RW3 poster is a three color silk-screen and is set in Helvetica Neue. The design was used on brochures, advertisements, signage, t-shirts, tickets and passes. The poster was featured in Communication Arts’ Typography Annual 2 in the January/February 2012 issue.

The first Rooster Walk poster was a more literal execution — using the profile of the rooster as imagery. It is a two color silk-screen and set in Rockwell. For Rooster Walk 2, I went to the local market and bought a pair of chicken feet. I made footprints with India ink and used the impressions as the visual for the poster. I kept the ink covered feet in the fridge overnight in case I needed to use them again for more footprints. It was certainly a shock to my roommates when they went looking for leftovers that night. The RW2 poster was set in Serifa and Gotham.

The Starr Hill Brewery was established in 1999 in the town of Charlottesville, Virginia, and took its name from the neighborhood where it was originally located. Starr Hill’s beers can be found throughout the mid-Atlantic and southeast United States. I did a variety of custom illustration, POS and advertising for Starr Hill Brewery in 2010. The company was closely aligned with live music and I created site specific promotional materials for different events where they were vendors.

What started as a typical branding project became a book chronicling the history of the two-party political system in the United States. From Caslon to Gotham, the typefaces changed in the book and followed chronologically with our political history. The mark was made and the visual identity system was created, which satisfied the requirements of the class. I wanted to use this opportunity to break outside scholastic requirements and learn about the most powerful brands in the United States — our political parties. This was a rebrand of the independent voter, who was not affiliated with any particular party. The challenge was to visually unite the independent base while leaving room for the individual voice.
